BIO
Larry Madrigal (b. 1986, Los Angeles) is a Mexican-American painter who treats the quotidian as a subject worthy of serious painting. Working in oil on linen from his studio in Phoenix, he paints the routines most people pass through without noticing — a morning rush, a fitting room, a late-night raid on the fridge — and suspends them until they surrender their questions about identity, labor, masculinity, desire, and mortality. He sees the commonplace, in his own words, as “an arena for sacred reflection on the complex nature of being.”
The quiet of the Southwest is essential. The arid Arizona landscape and suburban Phoenix life— “LA’s little cousin,” as Madrigal calls it — act as both backdrop and main character, the art world’s periphery becoming the condition that lets him look so closely. Parenthood, intimacy, and the slow comedy of domestic life enter as byproducts of that attention.
